MV Beats SRV

Tag: Varsity Summary
Event Date:
November 10 7:00 PM

CAPTAINS:  Lockie, Johnson, Wexler and Scritchfield
CONDITIONS:  40 degrees - See your breath cold from start of game

Each MV player contributed to a monumental win against heavily favored SRV to keep the trophy and cross town bragging rights at MV.  The  Captains were well chosen and their leadership supported the team through a minute by minute yard by yard game.

1st Quarter:  First series Lockie found Johnson, Chang, Scritchfield, Zamora down to a Redd 35yd field goal and first score of the game.  3-0 Mustangs.  The SRV drive faced defense from Turcotte, Landman and Lockie our new DB.  But SRV scored 3-7.  Hula recovered a SRV attempt at an onside kick and Lockie to Chang, Chang, Chang moved the ball but needed a McFarland punt at end of series.

2nd Quarter:  All about field position.  The first offensive series ended on a fake punt play and when SRV tried to move the ball the MV defense forced them to turn it over on downs.  The next MV series with a Chang Chang and a punt put the ball back to the 22.  But SRV found holes and scored.  3-14.   Lockie and Johnson got busy and brought it down before the half to a TD by Lockie to Scritchfield fingertip flying catch and Redd PAT.  10-14.

Halftime entertainment by SRV band, SRV cheer and MV cheer but for some reason SRV cheer needed to do flips to SRV cheers during the MV routines.  Really?   In the meantime the MV students, parents and cheer squads are cheering on the team despite a slow to update scoreboard during MV offense.  Really?

3rd Quarter:  MV defense turns up the heat on the wolves the second half.  Shirreffs, Millner, Stanton, Wexler, Turcotte, Landman and the list goes through the team because each player was playing defense.  First SRV series went to 3 and 22 so SRV punted to the 1.  MV fought back ending with a McFarland punt to midfield and some breathing room.  But SRV scores to bring it to 10-21.    Chang, Chang, Chang  (you know the song) led by Lockie until Melin is all open for a TD and tops it off with a 2pt conversion bringing it to 18-21.  6:33 left in the 3rd quarter.  MV holds next SRV series to a field goal.  But a fumble in the next MV series sets up SRV for a TD

4th Quarter starts at 9pm and 40 degrees.  SRV scores 18-30 but MV is not defeated.  We block the 2pt conversion attempt and take the defensive victory and shut down SRV for the quarter.  Following the kick off Chang, Johnson, Scritchfield, Lockie and Melin all take turns with a supporting cast of lineman moving the ball down field for a Chang TD.  25-30.  Stanton is all over the field in defense and offers for steak dinners will keep him eating well at MV family dinner tables for weeks.

And then things get interesting.  When Mustangs get the ball back they run the Lockie to Johnson to Zamora play getting to the goal line for a next play score with a QB keeper.   The 2 pt conversion blocked but Mustangs have the lead.  31-30 and 4:05 remaining.  The next SRV series ends in a 3 pt FG by SRV to edge out MV 31-33.  With very little time remaining Lockie takes quiet command and leads the team downfield.  With 9.4 seconds remaining Special Teams and Redd come out for a FG to put MV ahead 34-33 thereby ending the season for the Seniors with a win.

The Senior football players who started as freshman with a 9-1 record are proud to have never lost to SRV in regular season ball……giving an extra boost to the upcoming Awards Banquet celebrations.  Go Mustangs.
