Monte Vista Faces Off Strong with Cal High
Conditions: clear and crisp with ¾ moon
Captains: Lockie, Scritchfield, Shirreffs
Offense and Defense lines came to play and made a stand against an undefeated Cal team. They stopped the Cal rush, run and passing games holding the Grizzlies in the first half to a returned kick off TD and settling later for a field goal. Great job defense!
The Mustangs scored on their first series, working past penalties with a pass to Scritchfield who charged past clumps of defenders for a 47yd play. Followed by Redd PAT. 7-0 The next possession Grizzlies ran back a kick off 98 yards for their sole TD for the half. 7-7
The Mustangs took the ball back and worked down the field to a 45 yard field goal by Redd. 10-7.
The Grizzlies faced a recharged defense. Stanton tackled the QB 15 yards behind the line of scrimmage and Melin made a key tackle at 3&6. Millner stopped the next play so Grizzlies had to punt and Zamora brought it back to the 41. The punt battle for field position continues as McFarland punted back to the Grizzles to the 18 yrd line.
In the next offense series a cheer went out for Chang Chang Chang (sung to the oldies) who ran it 3 times to the 4 yd line where Lockie scrambled to score. 17-7
Out comes defense including sophomore Landman with a key tackle and we take over on downs. Waterboy John Carlo Romo first grader from Alamo School brings out water to the team. The Mustangs send McFarland out to punt and he drops it on the 8 yard line. Defense again charges the field and Maruyama, Melin hold the team until Shirreffs takes the QB down way behind the line of scrimmage. The stand off continues but Cal had to settle for a FG to end the 1st half. 17-10.
Halftime entertainment included announcement of the homecoming court and entertainment by the cheer squads and band.
At 8:35pm the Mustangs first play had Scritchfield straight arming his way down the line. Plays to Scritchfield, Chang, fumble recovery, Changx4 ends with a TD by Lockie and a PAT by Redd. 24-10
Defense again- yeah!    The Mustangs held Dunn runs, Lanman hit the QB….Mustangs offense runs in a punt with a do-over for McFarland with a 45 yard punt puts the Grizzlies to the 30. End of 3rd Qtr 24-10.
Fourth Quarter Mustangs will not score again while attempting to hold off the Grizzly offense. Defense continued to shine as Stanton intercepted and halted a Grizzly run. Unable to make first down the Mustangs McFarland 45 yard punt to the 22 forced the Grizzlies back. But Cal answered in the final minute with a TD and game-winning 2 point conversion.
