JV vs Foothill
JV-Mustangs Excel in 28-9 Stampede of Foothill
November 4, 2011 MVHS Field: The JV Mustangs continued their recent streak of improved play today, with perhaps their best performance of the year in all phases of the game; offense, defense and special teams, decisively trampling the Falcons under their hoofs. The 28-9 score was not indicative of the Mustangs dominance, as the Falcons resorted to trick plays and benefited from lucky bounces that keyed their two scoring drives. The Mustangs moved the ball on the ground and in the air, had no turnovers, gave up no long gainers on defense and executed their special teams play effectively.
Nikita Zamora had a great day passing, unofficially going 10 of 13 for 135 yards for two touchdowns on connections to John Kaiser. The first TD pass, a 10 yard bullet over the middle and the second a 46 yard bomb that was a thing of beauty. Another 36 yard long gainer led to the Mustangs third touchdown. On the ground, new comer Kevin Woo got the crowd pumped up with, unofficially, 50 yards rushing, and Rydian Searls added another 40 yards as the Mustangs were consistently effective with the signature MV stretch play throughout the game. Dylan Merrell and Nikita also contributed short yardage TD runs as the Mustangs effectively finished in the red zone on offense. The strong passing and running game were keyed by strong blocking, way to go, O-Line!
The defense had four sacks, one by Jason Washington, a big 10 yarder by Francis DeMartini, one by Dylan Merrill and one by Ryan Chen. Ryan made a number of other big stops, shooting the gap with perfect timing for one big loss, and breaking up a pass play a well. Dylan also embarrassed the Falcons running game with a big 7 yard tackle for loss. Tyler Burkland got things really going for the Mustangs with a big fumble recovery deep in Foothill territory that set up Monte Vista’s first TD, a lead that the Mustangs never lost. Erik Messendiek broke up a couple of pass attempts and pursued well on a sweep, stringing it out for no gain. John Kaiser also played great pass defense, knocking down several passes, including an attempt by Foothill for a two point conversion on their only touchdown. Overall a great team effort on D!
The improvement has been exponential over the last four games boys, let’s ride the momentum and finish with a great effort at San Ramon next week!
