JV-Mustangs Win at Amador 22-19

October 28, 2011 AVHS Field:  The JV Mustangs played some excellent football today, and more importantly showed real character in refusing to lose to the Amador squad that needed a lot of good breaks and bounces to stay in the game.  The Mustangs dominated the line of scrimmage on both offense and defense, and allowed Amador only one drive of any length.  The Offense didn’t punt all game, and the Defense came up big several times in turning back the Dons after turnovers, as well as generating turnovers as well.  Kudos go to Coach Philapil for a very gusty and strategic call to go for 2 after the Mustangs last TD, and kudos also to the Mustang offense for converting  for two, which put the Dons down 2 scores late in the game, which they were unable to overcame.

There where a number of great plays on offense and defense; a great long touchdown from Nikita Zamora to John Kaiser for 60 yards on a beautiful pass catch and run to tie the score at 7 in the second quarter.  Rydian Searls again led a strong power rushing game that was keyed by strong blocking form the O-Line late, scoring two touchdowns and running in the key 2 point PAT.  The passing game led by QB Nikita also had some nice connections to Ben Wensley and Erik Mensendiek.  Erik made a terrific catch towards the end of the first half, diving onto his back and keeping his body between the ball and the ground for a 25 yard gain.  And Ben caught a long gainer for 25 yards as time ran out in the half.  Rydian also got into the passing game with a 16 yard screen pass reception, convoyed up field by OT Julian Goldman, which out foxed the Amador blitz scheme.

On defense Both Tyler Burkland and John Kaiser had big INTs.  Dylan Merrill, Ryan Chen, Francis DeMartini, Jason Washington and Brandon Lim all had big stops and tackles for loss as well.  Other than a single break away run of 64 yards for a TD, the rushing defense was very much improved. The pass defense allowed only one more completion to the Dons, 3, than they caught themselves, 2.  Not a very effective passing day for Amador! The whole defensive line put pressure on Amador during their last gasp drive at the end of the game, but the big sack that sealed the victory went to Brandon.  It was a play that summed up the JV Mustangs refusal to lose and best overall effort to date in “finishing”!

Much improvement over the last three games boys, lets keep up the good work!
