September 29, 2011 Granada HS Field:  The Junior Varsity Mustangs galloped off to a great start, with Ben Wensley and the special team kick-off squad opening the game wit a long TD return.  But from then on through the middle of the third quarter, the Matadors piled up the touchdowns through their running game (Granada  threw only one pass the entire game) and on turnovers with daunting regularity, piling up 48 unanswered points.
The Mustangs emerged from the twilight zone midway through the third, with two fine defensive stops, including a turnover on downs and a turnover of their own on defense, and put together some significant success with Mustang brand passing attack, including some highlight reel completions to both Wensley John Kaiser, and a well designed TD pass to Erik Mensendiek on goal line offense that had the Grenada Defense no where to be found.
Nikita Zamora had some nice QB keepers, and the offensive line generally protected well as the offense rarely went to the ground attack.  With the improved defensive and offensive play from the mid third quarter, the Mustangs can hope to put the early game trip to the twilight zone behind them.  Two scoring opportunities deep in Granada territory were missed after impressive drives, so there were some good things for coach Philapil’s squad to build on.
